You can't really know what areas of your business need improvement unless you take time to assess your current situation. This benchmark is designed to help you evaluate four areas of your business - Vision & Goals, Marketing & Sales, Planning & Time Management, Support System & Quality of Life.

Vision & Goals  
I have a clear and compelling vision for my business and I know exactly where I want to be in 90 days, six months, a year and five years.

I regularly set goals in writing and plan specific action steps to help me accomplish them.
If there is more than one person involved in my business, all the key players are in agreement on the direction in which the business is heading and on the steps necessary to achieve your goals.

Marketing & Sales
 
I have a clear and specific target market. I know exactly who my potential clients are and have an in-depth understanding of their needs.
I'm aware of many different marketing strategies and tactics and I have a marketing plan in place that I'm systematically implementing.
I can articulate with ease who I work with, the reason why they hire me (or buy my products) and how my services or products solve their problems. And I can do it in 30 seconds or less.
I have attractive marketing materials (business cards, brochures, website, etc.) that support my marketing efforts and give my potential clients a good sense of who I am and how I can help them.
I have a follow-up system in place to regularly keep in touch with past, current and potential clients.
I have a network of referral partners who service the same target market and with whom I do business and keep in touch regularly.
I frequently receive referrals from my clients and I have a system in place to actively solicit new referrals on ongoing basis.
I have an effective sales system in place that allows me to guide prospects from the initial contact to a follow up meeting, to a sales presentation and to a signed contract.
I've developed a set of well thought out questions which allows me to gain an in-depth understanding of my clients' needs and to further demonstrate my expertise.

Planning & Time Management
 
I consistently spend at least 20 percent of my working time developing strategies to grow my business to ensure steady and healthy growth.
I use an organizer to keep track of my time and my contacts and to prioritize all my activities in writing.
I'm keenly aware of the role I play in my business and schedule my time effectively by focusing only on high leverage activities.
I can delegate effectively. I'm aware of my limitations and always delegate/outsource all the non-essential tasks.

Support System & Quality of Life
 
I'm excited about my business. I'm always looking forward to my daily activities. My work gives me immense satisfaction and great sense of accomplishment.
I have good balance in my life. I don't allow any one activity to completely take over my life. I frequently schedule time to enjoy non-business activities, relax and re-evaluate the priorities in my life.
I'm making a contribution to my community and the world. I'm consistently donating a portion of my money and time to worthwhile causes.
I have a support system. I have an advisory board / coach / mentor with whom I can openly collaborate on all business issues.
